On November 10th, the Ridgewood Indian Community celebrated Diwali at the Ridgewood Public Library in partnership with the Community Relations Advisory Board. The celebration included traditional dancing, a play on the story of Diwali, and a fashion show featuring clothing representing all the states of India.
Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu celebration symbolizing the light over darkness that is celebrated during the months of October or November. This year Diwali started on November 11th in conjunction with the new moon. The celebration lasts five days and is one of the most brightest and colorful celebrations. Indian families gather together in their newest or favorite outfits, light clay lamps, and eat lots of delicious sweets and food.
